Spreading your social networking self…

August 6th, 2009… the day that Twitter almost died.

My fear was near realized today when both Twitter and Facebook were part of targeted attacks that caused issues with their service which means for us users – we cannot Log In!

Once I realized this early in the morning…as it is part of my practice daily to log on to Twitter and Facebook – I then ended up doing some unexpected blog reading – Mashable is fabulous at keeping me on top of things with his updates.  This lead me to sending notes to clients and after finishing some other work, I realized this Denial of Service Attack was not going to end soon.  I headed to the beach with the kids, got out my pen and paper and started writing some blog posts.

blogYes, your Blog.  it’s another way of using social networking though some don’t always realize the benefits in blogging.

For starters, you own your blog.  Unless you decide to stop writing or delete your blog, the content is there and you control it. As much as I love the free social media platforms, such as Twitter and Facebook – those sites/places where you publish content is owned by those companies.

Do I think they will shut down anytime soon?  Not really, though it is actually a tiny fear I ponder sometimes. All I am saying is you shouldn’t rely solely on these avenues to keep your web presence up to date.

Blogs are great ways to communicate to others about certain topics and engage others in discussions. They are another way people can get to know you to feel comfortable enough to do business with you. And you control the platform (well at least to some extent depending on how your blog is set up).

Blogging is really not any harder than writing a twitter or facebook post – it is the fear of writing long articles every day that scares people the most about blogs … but in fact the shorter the better. And publish your blog posts on a regular basis is all you need, and this doesn’t necessarily mean every day. As long as what you write about is relevant and useful to people they will read it.
